The Sickle Cell Association Marc Thomas Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas. The organization was created to be an aid for those affected with Sickle Cell Disease and now serves over 500 clients in the Austin and San Antonio regions and has outreached to over 75,000. Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that affects the red blood cells. The abnormal shaped red blood cells ("sickled") are sticky and malformed which causes excruciating pain when they become lodged in blood vessels, arteries and organs. Sickle Cell Disease affects persons of African, Hispanic, Italian, Greek and Mediterranean descent. Sickle Cell Disease can cause jaundice, severe pain crisis, liver and kidney failure, organ damage, strokes, lung damage and numerous other ailments. There is no cure.
The Sickle Cell Association Marc Thomas Foundation is proud to create Walk for Sickle! With this Walk, we are helping to educate and bring awareness to all of those affected with Sickle Cell Disease. By registering for this Walk you will be helping to provide services to persons living with this debilitating disease. This Walk will help send children with Sickle Cell Disease ages 6-14 to our acclaimed Camp Cell-A-Bration, provide support group meetings, family events, financial resources to families and numerous other services.
